“Mimi’s Saga” is a Norwegian publishing house. The publisher is Anne-Lise Bay Braathen, from Norway. Her grandchildren call her Mimi, hence the name “Mimi’s Saga”.
“My eldest son, Paal, emigrated to the US and lives outside Chicago with his wife, Jenny, and their two kids, Emma and Madelene. We are visiting them as often as we can. The idea of writing a book developed during conversations with Emma and Madelene. They love to hear stories from Norway. They are my main source of inspiration to write the books.
The format of the storytelling is a dialogue between my grandkids and me. This Norwegian storytelling tradition of sharing stories from one generation to another has been passed on by families for centuries.
The tales include a mixture of myths, legends and history. There are spectacular illustrations of the main characters and events throughout the books. You will also find maps that show where the Vikings travelled and the main events from the books took place.
My professional career started as a teacher in high school with lectures in Norwegian, French and history. For several years I have worked in the Norwegian immigration administration in various roles helping immigrants integrate into the Norwegian society. After I retired, I have been active in my hometown as a volunteer for the Red Cross teaching immigrants Norwegian and working on the books for my grandkids.
Mimi’s Saga turned out to be a family project. My husband, two sons, other family members and friends have given assistance and support along the way.
My son in the US, Paal Bay Braathen, is the co-author. My daughter in law, Jennifer Alcantara Braathen, has given assistance with translation from Norwegian to English. My grandkids, Emma and Madelene, have also contributed. My sister in law, Anne Øiseth, has given artistic support and feedback.
The illustrator, Caterina Moretti, has produced all the drawings in the books. In a spectacular and artistic way she has recreated the world the Vikings lived and believed in. She has been instrumental with the layout of the books and the design of the websites.
Fiskerstrand Hegland AS has implemented mimissaga.com, set up social accounts, Amazon listings and online marketing.”
THE CITIES
In the beginning of the Viking Age there were no cities in Norway. Trondheim was founded by Olaf Tryggvason in 997 AD. Oslo and Stavanger were founded in the 1000’s. These places are included on the map.
THE TITLE EARL
SVOLDER
The island of Svolder no longer exists. According to some historians, Svolder was made of sand or limestone and disappeared in the 14th century along with several other islands along the coast of the Baltic Sea.
NAVIGATION
The Vikings sailed without maps. They navigated mainly by the sun and the stars. Polaris, also called the North Star, was their guiding star. Polaris is on the last illustration in both books. You will find it at the end of the zodiac sign Ursa Minor, above the Big Dipper.
